The District Attorney is a county-wide elected official serving for a four-year term. As Yates County’s chief law enforcement officer, the District Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all violations of the law that occur within Yates County. In addition, the District Attorney in Yates County handles all criminal appeals at all levels of appeal, including County Court, the Appellate Division 4th Department, and the Court of Appeals. Ancillary responsibilities include being legal advisor to the Grand Jury, prosecuting forfeiture proceedings, extradition of criminals from outside of the state, prosecuting violations of sentencing provisions, and support of victims of crime. The District Attorney is also called upon regularly to advise law enforcement agencies throughout the county.
Our staff is comprised of one full-time District Attorney, two full-time assistants and a secretary/paralegal/administrative assistant.
We prosecute over one-thousand cases each year. For each of the past five out of six years we have ranked second of the 62 counties in New York State in DWI conviction rates, and in 2008 Yates County had the highest DWI conviction rate in New York State.
