Services for Adults
and Families
Various programs are
offered that are designed to keep the person over the age of 18 safe
and healthy. Some of the services offered include:
Referrals
may be made by calling 315-536-5183, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.
to 5 p.m.
Adult Protective
Services (PSA)
Protective Services for Adults (PSA) are provided without regard to
income to assist people age 18 or older who have physical or mental
impairments to the extent that they cannot meet their basis needs for
food, clothing, shelter or medical care; are unable to protect
themselves from neglect, abuse or hazardous situations; and have no
one willing or able to help them in a responsible manner. This also
includes self-neglect which might be an inability to access
services or benefits or awareness of being abused or taken advantage
of by a caregiver.
Financial
Management Services
This
program is designed to keep people safe from financial exploitation
or mis-use. Anyone who needs help in managing finances can be served
by having Social Services be a Representative Payee and oversee
the income and spending of SSI checks, disability payments and so
forth.
Personal Care Services
This
program is designed to keep the person safely in their own home
rather than having to be placed in a nursing home or institution.
This program is available for anyone over the age of 18 who needs
assistance with daily bathing, shampooing, toileting, laundry,
grocery shopping, linen changes, vacuuming, meal preparation and
dishes and so on. A referral from your physician or any person
who knows of a need is considered. Long Term Care Services
are basically the same except for needing skilled nursing.
What
is Adult/Elder Abuse?
When we talk about adult and elder abuse, we're talking about family. Your family, my family, the family next door, the family across town. Someone you know might be suffering from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The kindly neighbor next door who trims your hedges might be a victim of financial exploitation by a family member, caretaker, or other close associate.
One out of every 14 Americans over the age of 60 may be suffering from some sort of abuse. And for each case of elder abuse reported, five more cases go unreported. It's hard to imagine that those who have protected and cared for us for all these years may now need our care and protection, but it's true.
New York State's Protective Services for Adults program, provided through local county departments of social services, has been created by law to aid in the protection of impaired adults over the age of 18 who may be falling victim to abuse.
PSA clients are among the most debilitated and neglected members of the community: the frail elderly, the mentally ill, the mentally retarded and the abused and exploited. These persons are often not known to any agency or have refused services and are isolated from family and friends. The need to provide help for these individuals will continue to grow as our population ages and family ties become strained by distance and the burden of chronic illness
