Part IX: Cemeteries in the town of Barrington

BARRINGTON BAPTIST CEMETERY: Notes

Barrington Baptist cemetery

This is the burying ground originally associated with the oldest church in Barrington. The first meetings were held in 1815 but formal organization of the congregation occurred in 1819, as the Second Baptist Church of Wayne.

This was of course before the town itself was formed from part of the Steuben County town of Wayne. The meeting house itself was erected in 1821 and the first meetings were held there the following year. The building stood adjacent to where the cemetery is now.

When the town was divided, the greater part of this congregation resided in Barrington, so it was renamed the Barrington Baptist Church. The meeting house still stood 50 years after it was built, though in dilapidated condition; by the time Cleveland wrote his history the congregation met in the village of Wayne.

The cemetery now is as dilapidated as the meeting house became. It has been overtaken by woods and though more or less adjacent to the road is almost invisible from it. It has of course been neglected for many years and is completely unmaintained, though protected to a certain extent by its proximity to the nearby dwelling. The plot is often called the Wright Cemetery, because it lay on the Wright farm.
