This, the town’s largest cemetery, was once associated with its only Methodist Church, which stood on the corner adjacent. The congregation was founded by William Ovenshire, who held meetings in his own home beginning about 1809, long before a regular preacher could be found. The church was finally built in 1842, within sight of Ovenshire’s house.

The church building was moved to the hamlet of Warsaw after the congregation became defunct, and the burying ground was abandoned and completely neglected for many years. It was once even enclosed within a fenced pasture. However, in recent years the town crew has cleaned it out, put up the present fence and maintains access to it from the highway. It’s evident that many markers disappeared during the years of neglect, and many of those that remain are damaged, fallen or partially buried.

Occasionally this ground is referred to as the Methodist Cemetery, the Ovenshire Cemetery or as the Barrington Cemetery.

There have been many readings done of this cemetery, and some names have crept into the lists which cannot now be confirmed from any other record. Some of these names were in error, and if the stones no longer exist, it is not now possible to confirm what the reading really should have been. The compilers have very regretfully decided to omit readings and partial readings of missing stones that could not be corroborated by at least some other evidence.
