A sister of the late Judge Henry Wells, the widow of Gen. George McClure, died
recently in Wyoming, Iowa,
aged eighty-six years.

There died in Brooklyn the other day one of the most
remarkable men for genius of invention known during the present century. He
died the last day, or about the last day of the old year.—His name was Jeptha
A. Wilkinson. His father, Jeptha Wilkinson, was a
brother of Jemima Wilkinson, the Universal Friend….[He]
was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island
in 1791. He was a soldier in the war of 1812….Afterwards he invented a remarkably
ingenious machine for the manufacture of weaver’s reeds….He married in Paris
Sarah H. Gibson, daughter of John H. Gibson, a wealthy lawyer of London, who
left them a handsome fortune at his death. They were the parents of fourteen
children. … Jeptha Avery Wilkinson was a brother of
Mrs. Nancy Johnson, the mother of our townsman Jeptha
A. Potter….
Died at his residence in this village on Saturday morning, January
3, 1874, John D. Wolcott, at the age of forty-eight years, nine months
and fifteen days. [He] was born March
19, 1825 at Eddytown, and was the fourth child of Dr. Walter Wolcott
and Abigail Cornwell, his wife….He married in 1856 Carolina,
daughter of Dr. William Cornwell. Their surviving children are Abigail, Walter
and John….
Died in Rushville, December 25, 1873, Mrs. Sarah VanEpps,
wife of Daniel VanEpps, aged sixty-seven years, four months and five days,
Mrs. VanEpps has been ill for ten years with cancer
of the eye, and during the last three or four years she has been a great sufferer.
She was born in Amsterdam, N.Y.,
August 29th, 1806;
her maiden name was Slover. She was married to Mr.
Daniel VanEpps in Cayuga county,
July 2, 1825. About forty
years ago they came to and have since resided in this vicinity. She leaves a
husband and seven children….—Naples Record

- In Gorham, near Rushville, at the home of the bride, December 31, 1873,
by Rev. Wm. Adams, Mr. Ely Lewis of Benton and Miss Sarah Washburn, daughter
of Joshua Washburn of Gorham.
Died in Barrington, Dec. 30th,
of apoplexy, after an illness of three hours, Dillis Fish, aged 76 years. Mr. Fish was born near Bennington,
Vt. When he was about four years of age his
parents removed to Groton, Tompkins
county, where he continued to reside until 1836, when
with his family he removed to Barrington….

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoult of Geneva
celebrated their Golden Wedding on Christmas eve. Among
their guests was the couple that “stood up” with them fifty years ago, Mr. and
Mrs. George Catchpole.
Mrs. Julia M. Hogarth, relict of Richard Hogarth,
for many years a magistrate at Geneva, and mother of Rev. Dr. William Hogarth,
pastor of the Second Presbyterian church of that place, died at her residence
there on the 29th ult., aged nearly eighty-two
years. She was a resident of Geneva
more than sixty years.
James H. Woods, a former resident of Geneva,
and more recently of New York,
died in the latter place December 18th, at the age of seventy-three
years….
Mrs. Deborah Anderson, widow of the late Elder Joseph G. Anderson, died in
Barrington, January 4, 1874, at the age of seventy-three
years.
Died in this village on Thursday the 8th instant, Neil J. Kelly,
aged thirty-five years. He was born in Glasgow,
Scotland, where his parents
resided till after their children were born. The family emigrated to America
and came to Penn Yan in 1846, and have since resided here. The oldest son, Charles
Kelly, is the proprietor of the Central House. In August 1862 Neil J. Kelly
enlisted in Company A, 126th Regiment N.Y.V. …Present at the funeral
were the aged parents of both the deceased and his widowed wife. Mr. Neil Kelly,
seventy-five years old; his wife, sixty-five; Daniel Russel, ninety-two and his wife, also an aged woman….
Died very suddenly at her home in this village, on Sunday morning, January
11, 1874, SueAnnett, wife of Oliver F. Reed, aged twenty-two years.

One of those pleasing episodes in one’s life which comparatively few live to
realize and participate in, occurred on New Year’s at the residence of F.P.
Hurd, Esq., in Jerusalem.
It was the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of A.A. French
and wife. Mr. French came from New Jersey
to the “Lake country” in an early day, and on Jan. 1, 1824, united in marriage with
Sally Sears, and settled in Jerusalem,
where he spent the greater part of his life. They have seven children living,
five daughters and two sons. Of the daughters four reside in Steuben county, and one is the wife of Ferris P. Hurd
of Jerusalem. Of the sons one lives
in Steuben county, and the other, Johnson French, of
the firm of French & St. John, resides in this village. Mrs. French has
three brothers and one sister living. The sister is the wife of Mr. Francisco,
and resides near Canandaigua. One of the brothers resides in Steuben county, one in Wisconsin,
and the other, Mr. Robert French, resides in Benton….
Died in Italy Hollow after a protracted illness, on Thursday, January 9, 1874, Orrin Barker,
aged fifty years….
Mrs. Beeman, wife of Chauncey Beeman, Italy Hill, died at the residence of her son, Charles
Beeman in Hill Town on Wednesday morning…Mrs. Beeman
came here for a visit and was taken sick;….—Naples Record

January 6th, 1874, Mrs. Mary Ann Carroll, widow of the
late Col. William Carroll of Benton,
aged fifty-two years.

David Taylor, the aged shoemaker on Sheppard street,
where he has been an invalid for several years, died on Monday night, Jan. 19th,
aged seventy years.
James H. McNair, a pioneer of the Genesee valley, died
at Mt. Morris
January 8, aged eighty-six years. He had been a resident of Mt.
Morris seventy-six years.
Died at Ossoway, Potter county,
Pa., on Tuesday,
January 20, 1874, Mrs. Harriet Wheeler, wife of Horace Wheeler of
Jerusalem, at the age of thirty-one
years and six months. The deceased was a daughter of John B. Harris of Jerusalem,
and at the time of her death was on a visit to her sister, Mrs. John Brown, whose husband is a hotel keeper at Ossoway….She leaves one child, a son of five years of age.
Died at his home in the town of Wayne,
Steuben county, on Tuesday, January 20, 1874, Joseph Roat,
aged about seventy-three years. Mr. Roat was for many
years a well known citizen of this village. His father, John Roat, came with his family to Benton
as early as 1810 and lived for some time on a little place near the home of
James Smith. Somewhat later the family moved to Jerusalem
and lived a number of years near the present home of Isaac W. Hartshorn….
Died at the residence of his daughter in Wayne
on Tuesday the 14th ult., of apoplexy,
David Bishop, aged eighty-eight years. [He] was born on Long Island,
August 5, 1785. He married in 1809 Charity
Biggs, and they had ten children. They came to this section of country about
1816. In 1848 he emigrated with his family to Cook county, Illinois, where they
continued about 20 years….The last years of his life were passed at the homes
of his daughters, Nancy wife of Wright Seymour of Wayne; and Mary, wife of Hiram
Cornell of Dundee….I.C.C.

David Livingstone has died in the midst of his labors, leaving his greatest
work unfinished. Before he set out on his last journey, it is said,
he told Sir Bartle Frere that he intended to
trace the boundaries of the east, west, and south sides of the great Nile
basin….
Miss Elizabeth Black, a resident in Geneva
since 1806, died in that village on the 14th inst., in her eighty-seventh
year.
Died in this village January 22, 1874, Miss Emma B. Ellis,
aged twenty-two years, ten months and three days….
Died in this village on Monday, Jan. 26th inst., Mrs. Ann E. Phillips,
widow of the late John K. Phillips, aged 53 years. …
Died at Rock Stream on Monday the 19th inst., John Coon, of old
age, at the age of eighty years. He was a native of Salem,
N.Y….
Died in Eddytown, on Tuesday, the 20th of January, Mrs. R., wife
of James C. Henderson, of heart disease. She was about sixty years of age….
Died at Avon, on the 16th instant, Floyd
D. Torrance, aged forty-seven years. He was born at Starkey in 1827, and became
a resident of Avon in 1837….He was a brother of our respected townsman, Underhill
Torrance, and a nephew of the venerable pioneer Floyd Dann….A
son survives him who lives with his uncle Charles E. Upton….J.C.C., Avon, January

Died at his house in this village on Saturday morning Jan.
31, 1874, Samuel J. Ackley, in the eightieth year of his age. [He]
was born August 29, 1794, in the county
of Delaware in this State, and was
a son of Jacob Ackley, a soldier of the revolution. While he was quite young
his family moved to Ovid, Seneca county where he grew
up to manhood and became a cooper by trade. September 12, 1816 he married Elizabeth King of Genoa,
Cayuga county. She was born in Monmouth county, New Jersey,
March 9, 1800, and survives
her husband….After their marriage they lived about fifteen years at Goodwin’s
Point, near Trumansburg on Cayuga lake, and eight years
following in the village of Trumansburg.
In the spring of 1839 they moved to Penn Yan where they have since resided.
Their Golden Wedding was celebrated in 1866. Mr. Ackley…enlisted twice in the
war of 1812….It was always his pride that he was the pilot on the first steamboat
launched on Cayuga lake…the Enterprise.
Its first trip dates back to 1819. This aged pair were
the parents of eleven children, nine of whom are still living. One, John M.,
died in 1839, three years old. William K., the oldest, married Emma Barrett,
and is a resident of this village. Phebe Jane married John Bennett and resides
in Allegany county. Sylvanus H. married and resides
in Iowa. James Lawrence married
Caroline Gould and lives in Wisconsin….Julia
Ann is the wife of Alfred J. Kerney of this village.
Harriet M. married James VanBuren son of Hon. Evert VanBuren and died in 1864
at Chicago…. Catharine M. is the
wife of William Stewart, now resident at Willard, Seneca county.
Samuel Harvey married Adaline Lightner
and resides in Penn Yan….Charles M. married Sarah Jane Smith and is a resident
of Penn Yan….

Jan. 29th, by Rev. A.C. Mallory, Mr. William J. Davis of Benton
to Miss Alice R. Beard of Seneca.
Died
- On Wednesday morning, Feb. 4th, Hattie Ross, wife of William
Ross, adopted daughter of William W. Smith of Torrey, aged twenty-three years.
- In Eddytown,
Yates county, on Jan. 20th, Mrs. Caroline
F. Henderson, aged 67 years, formerly a resident of Geneva.
Our old friend Col. Samuel Allen of Benton
reached the fiftieth anniversary of his wedding Jan. 22d, and would have celebrated
the event but for sickness and death at that time in the family of his daughter.
Benton has no more worthy citizen
than Col. Allen, and we trust he may see many returns of the anniversary just
passed. In the same neighborhood near Ferguson’s
Corners is another couple, that of Smith Ferguson and wife, who have also passed
their 50th bridal anniversary.
Died in Barrington on the
26th of December 1873 of apoplexy, Mr. Dillis
Fish, at the age of nearly 70 years. He was born in Shelbourne,
Chittenden county, Vt.,
March 18, 1798. In 1808
he came with his parents to Groton,
then in Cayuga, now Tompkins county, where his father
erected a grist mill and a wool carding and cloth dressing establishment. Here
the subject of this notice learned the last named business; and continued it
in the same place for many years. In 1821 he was married to Miss Rebecca Brown,
a daughter of Mr. Ichabod Brown of Groton,
with whom he lived twenty-two years. The fruits of this union were seven children,
four sons and three daughters, two of whom have passed away, one son and one
daughter. In 1836 he left Groton
and came to Barrington, where he
became a farmer, having exchanged his mill property for a farm then owned by
his brother-in-law Rev. Ira Brown, late of Corning.
Here the wife of his youth died in March 1843 leaving him in care of his family
without a helpmate. In 1844 he was again married to Miss Emeline
A. Huson, a maiden lady who still survives him and by whom he had one son. He
resided upon the farm where he died about thirty-seven years and for several
years was overseer of the poor of the town, which office he held at his death.—Corning

David Frederick Strauss, the great German rationalist, noted for his “Life
of Jesus” and other works not approved by the orthodox, died on Monday aged
66 years.
Judge Alfred Conkling, father of Senator Roscoe Conkling,
died last week at the age of eighty-two years. He studied law with Daniel Cody,
and was eminent as a jurist.
Mrs. Polly Gillett, wife of the late Jabez Gillett, Esq., and well known throughout
this section, died quite suddenly last Sunday afternoon. In the morning she
seemed as well as usual, and requested her son Harmon M. Gillett, with whom
she resided, to visit a sick friend after services at church were over. Two
children remained with her….[Her] maiden name was Polly
Beebe. She was born in Homer, Cortland
county, April
7th, 1795. She married at Canandaigua May 25th, 1815, Jabez Gillett,
afterwards a prominent citizen of Italy Hollow. Soon after her marriage, her
husband removed to Prattsburg, Steuben county, and
resided there until 1834, when Mr. Gillett with his family settled in Yates
county, on the farm now occupied by Harmon M. Gillett. Jabez Gillett died in
May 1862. Their eldest child Maria, now dead, was the wife of Lewis B. Graham
of Penn Yan. Three children still live, Jeremiah T., Elizabeth, wife of Wm.
Fox, and Harmon M., all of Italy
Hollow….
Benjamin Fellows, brother of the late Joseph Fellows of Corning, died in Scranton
a few days ago at the age of eighty-two years.
Died in Jerusalem on Wednesday,
February 11, 1874, Mrs. Harriet Hunt, wife of George Hunt, at a very
advanced age. A further notice will appear hereafter.

Harriet Prouty, formerly of Middlesex, aged thirty-nine
years.

Died at his home in the town of Dix,
Schuyler county, on Sunday Feb. 15, 1874, George R. Cleveland, youngest son of
Noble Cleveland, at the age of twenty-four years, four months and twenty-six
days. …
Giles Parker, Sr., father of S.H. Parker editor of the Geneva Gazette,
died at his home in Geneva on the
7th inst., at the age of eighty years, six months and twenty days.
He was a native of Lenox, Massachusetts.
His parents moved to the town of Reading
near the head of Seneca lake
in 1807. He served as a soldier in the war of 1812…went back to his birthplace
and married a wife who survives him, and finally made his permanent home in
Geneva in 1823, where he has resided
more than half a century…His children were seven sons and one daughter. Six
surviving sons attended his funeral.

Mr. George McFeggan, so long and so well known as
station agent on the Central railroad at Geneva,
died February 16, in the seventieth year of his age.
Sophia L. Downer, wife of John J. VanAlen, Esq., of Watkins, died at her home in that village
of consumption on the 14th inst., aged forty-two years.
Constant Cook, one of the oldest, wealthiest and most respected citizens of
Bath, died in that village on Tuesday, at the age of seventy-six years. He was
a cousin of the late Charles Cook of Havana,
and resembled him much in personal characteristics.
Married in Millport on Wednesday evening, February
11th, 1874, Mr. Theodore F. Holden of Starkey, to Miss
Allie Hatch, adopted daughter of Mr. John S. Carr….
Died of consumption at his home in Barrington,
on Friday February 13, 1874,
Lewis Sunderlin, son of the late Delazon J. Sunderlin,
aged thirty-four years….
Rushville—Our esteemed citizen Mr. Edward Perry, celebrated the seventieth
anniversary of his birth day on Tuesday evening….The entire affair was under
the supervision of Mrs. Perry and her daughters Mrs. Sebnell
and Mrs. Torrey….Recently we called at the house of Mr. Harvey Fowler, and observing
a very aged lady…we enquired of Mr. Fowler her name and age. He informed us
that her name was Nancy Blair—she was Mrs. Fowler’s mother—and was ninety-one
years old; but he remarked that his mother, Mrs. Sybil Fowler, who was at a
neighboring house, was ninety-two years old.— Naples Record

United States Judge Nathan K. Hall of Buffalo died on Tuesday in his sixty-fourth
year. He was appointed to his office by President Fillmore and was regarded
an upright and faithful judge.
Rushville—The melancholy news on Saturday morning
of the death of Hiram Rapalee fell upon us with the
shock of a sudden calamity. He died suddenly at his home near the village, Feb.
21st 1874, aged 65 years, 10 months and 27 days….[He] was born in
the town of Milo, March 24, 1808. In 1831 he was married to Miss Phebe Ann Headly.
In 1833 they came to Gorham, Ontario
county, and settled on the farm where he resided at
the time of his death. He leaves five children—daughters—and all married; four
of them reside in and near this village, and one, Mrs. Lemuel
Dwelle, at Green Lake, Mich….—Naples

the twenty-ninth year of her age.

Yan on Tuesday, March 3, 1874, Sarah Gray, daughter of Isaac Gray,
aged seventeen years.
A.V. Masten celebrated the fifty-fourth anniversary of his birth on Monday
by inviting his friends to drink eggnog with him.

Eleanor Locke of Milo, widow of the late Henry M. Locke,
daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Bassett and Anna Bassett, formerly of Milo,
aged seventy-eight years….
Died at his residence near this village on Thursday the 27th of
February, Major George A. Sheppard, aged seventy-one years. The deceased was
the oldest son of the late Hon. Morris F. Sheppard and Rachel his wife…Within
the past year and a half his home has been invaded three times by death, gathering
from it a dearly beloved wife, his eldest daughter, and now the head of the
family. He leaves three promising children, George (almost a young man), Anna
and Walter….F.
Married at Starkey on Wednesday evening, February 25, at the residence of L.G.
Jones by Rev. Moses Livermore, Mr. John Beattie of Himrods and Miss Mary Frank
of the same place.

Keech, wife of Stephen Keech,
died quite suddenly on Thursday night last….

Elder Jacob Knapp, the celebrated revivalist, died at Rockford,
Ill., on Monday, March 2, at the age of seventy-four
years.
Millard Fillmore, the thirteenth President of the United
States, died at his home in Buffalo
late on Sunday evening last, the 8th inst., at the age of seventy-four
years. [He] was a native of the town of Locke,
now known as Summerville, Cayuga county, and was the
second of a family of nine children…

Penn Yan, and Alice A., daughter of Julius Ives, Esq., of Geneva.

M.D., of Penn Yan to Miss Augusta Kenyon of Bluff Point.

City, March 7, 1874, by the Rev. Dr. Roberts, Mr. Frank H. Stanford of Elizabeth
City, N.J., to Miss Hattie A. Ellis of New Bedford, Mass.

inst., Mr. Erastus Daily, aged fifty-five years.
- In Starkey, February 16, Mrs. Elizabeth K., wife of Peter Millspaugh,
aged twenty-five years, six months and fifteen days.
Jacob H. Sabin, a well known mechanic of this village, died quite suddenly
on Friday last, aged about fifty-three years.
John Anderson, an aged resident of this village, died last week. His age is
reported at seventy-eight.

Register, the mournful account of the decease of Miss Loe
R. Thomas, daughter of the late Ambrose S. Thomas, Esq., of Potter….No member
of her father’s family, that we are aware of, is now a resident of Yates county. Her brother, Mr. James G. Thomas, is a member of the
firm of Ayres & Thomas, dry goods merchants of Geneva.
Died at the residence of her son, Mr. Albert Bates in the town of Middlesex,
Feb. 23rd, 1874, Mrs. Sarah Bates aged
86 years. She was born in Shaftsbury, Vt.,
in 1788. Her maiden name was Sarah Benham. She was married early in life to
Mr. Thomas Bates and came with him over sixty years ago to the town of Middlesex
and settled on the farm where she died….About 24 years ago her husband died
suddenly of heart disease, and a son sometime before was killed by the fall
of a tree. Later in life she has buried two children, her eldest daughter and
a son—her four surviving children deeply mourn her loss….

Another illustrious son of the republic has finished his work. Charles Sumner
died on Wednesday night, the 11th inst., in his sixty-fourth year….
Adam Crozier died at his house in Benton
on Sunday evening, March 8, 1874,
at the age of seventy-six years, eight months and fourteen days. [He] was born
in Northumberland, England,
June 24th, 1797,
and at four years of age came to this country with the family of his father,
Adam Crozier, Senior. They settled near Hall’s Corners in the town of Seneca….[He]
married in 1821 Amy, daughter of Joseph Southerland of Potter, and settled on
lot 51 in Benton, a place purchased four years earlier by his father. There
he resided through life, surviving his wife a little more than two years….Two
surviving sons, David S. Crozier and George E. Crozier, occupy the homestead….
Died at his home in Benton on Saturday,
Feb. 28, 1874, Alva Taylor, at the age of sixty-nine years. [He]
was born in Orange county, Feb.
17, 1805, and came to this county in 1816 at the age of eleven, ever
since which time he has been a resident of the town of Benton.
He remained through life a resident of the premises on which his father settled
in 1821, on lot 112 in southwest Benton…He
married Artelissa, daughter of William Genung of Jerusalem,
who survives him. Their son William J. Taylor married Harriet, daughter of Elnathan R. Hunt, and occupies the homestead with his mother
and his unmarried sister Mary E. Another daughter, Sarah J., is the wife of
Myron Peckins of Benton….
Eleanor Locke died in Milo on the 3d of March 1874. She was the widow
of the late Mr. Henry Locke, and elder daughter of the late Rev. Dr. John Bassett

A terrible calamity occurred at Independence
yesterday morning…About four o’clock a.m.
the residence of George L. King caught fire and was burned to the ground, and
all his family except himself perished in the flames. The family consisted of
his wife, two children…and his wife’s mother (Mrs. Morris)….
The above item is taken from an Iowa
paper of a recent date. Mrs. Morris therein mentioned is, we learn, the mother
of William C. Morris, formerly of Penn Yan.
Mrs. Julia Bixby Milliken, mother of N.J. Milliken, Esq., Editor of the Ontario
County Times, died at the residence of the latter in Canandaigua, on the
7th inst., in her ninety-second year.
Miss Mary Hoos, an estimable young lady residing
in Milo, died at her home on Friday, and her funeral was held and largely attended
on Sunday.—Democrat
Died in Barrington at the house
of her son on the 8th inst., Mrs. Catharine Merritt, wife of Mr.
Enos Merritt, in the fifty-third year of her age.
She was a daughter of the late Levi C. Dean of Barrington, and was married to
Mr. Merritt some thirty-two years since, and was the mother of three children,

Died at the residence of her son-in-law Charles C. Miller in Penn Yan on Sunday
morning, March 22, 1874,
Mrs. Marilla Herrick, widow of Nathan Herrick, in
the eightieth year of her age. [She] was born in Delaware
county, February
11, 1795, and as a maiden was Marilla Carrol. She married there David Hill, a native of Vermont
who was a soldier of the regular army in the war of 1812, and fought under General
Jackson at the battle of New Orleans. In 1816 they moved to this county, living
first on Bluff Point and afterwards in Penn Yan. He died January 23, 1834, aged fifty-five years;
and she subsequently, September 21,
1847, married Nathan Herrick, and with him lived several years in
Richmond, Ontario
county, afterwards moving back to Bluff Point, where
he died July 30, 1866, aged
seventy-three years. By her first marriage she was the mother of eight children—Ransom,
Sarah, Laura, Rebecca, Cynthia, Lucy Jackson and Mariette. Ransom has been twice married and is a farmer in
Canandaigua. Sarah married John McConnell and lives in Kansas.
Laura married Benjamin Wybert, a harness maker, and
they reside in Waterloo, Seneca
county. Rebecca is the wife of Charles C. Miller, postmaster
of this village. Cynthia married John R. Green, who is now a farmer at Ridgway, Kansas,
and was several years postmaster at that place. Lucy married Manley Canfield,
and died in Penn Yan in 1857, leaving two children. Jackson
married a wife in Olean and lives
in Allegany county. Mariette
married the present year, William Knapp of Carbondale,
Kansas….

Captain Nares was a young man of worth, and his death
is a serious public loss.
The Lyons Republican records the death of a pioneer citizen of that
village, Michael F. Vanderbilt, at the age of eighty-eight years.
Daniel L. Lum, a long abiding resident of Geneva,
died in that place last Thursday, aged seventy-six years. He was an honorable
merchant and a good man.

on Monday, March 18, 1874,
Kate Almy, wife of Martin Mosher, aged twenty-six
years. The body of the deceased was brought to Penn Yan for burial, and the
funeral took place on Saturday last.

On Thursday evening of last week, Mrs. Polly Torrey, mother of S.H. and R.S.
Torrey, Esqs., widow of Hiram Torrey, deceased, died at the residence of
her son, Hon. S.H. Torrey, Esq., in the seventy-fifth year of her age. Mrs.
Torrey lived for many years in Rushville and was well known in that locality.
For a few years past she has lived with her children in Geneva.
Her funeral took place on Monday. Her remains were taken to Penn Yan for burial.—Geneva

The wife of Mr. Michael Patterson, residing on Phelps street in this village,
gave birth to three children—two girls and a boy—on Wednesday morning last….The
trio were christened on Wednesday. Their names are Anna, Mary and Charles.—Ontario

- At Midway, Pa., Thursday,
March 10, T. Bertine, youngest son of T.B. and Marianne
Welles Robbins, aged eight months and seven days.
Died in this village on Monday evening last, Mrs. Almira
Glann, in the 66th year of her age. Funeral
took place yesterday morning at 11 o’clock at her late residence at the head of
Main st. The deceased was born at Ballston, Saratoga
county, in 1808. She was married to John Mather and resided at Albany
some time, but for the last forty-two years in this county. Her husband died
in Benton a few years ago, and deceased
again married Mr. John Glann of said town, and removed
to this village. Last May, Mr. Glann died and now
his wife has followed him. Mr. and Mrs. Glann were
highly respected by all that knew them.

Died at his home in Potter on Friday, February 20th, 1874,
James Voak, at the age of eighty-three years, one month and four days. This
aged citizen came with his parents at the age of five years in 1796 to the place
where he subsequently lived more than three-fourths of a century….[He] was a
son of John Voak and Rachel Dyer his wife,…the second of three children and
was born January 16, 1791, in the town of Hardwick, Sussex county, N.J. His
parents settled in the midst of the dense forest at the place since known as
the Voak settlement in 1796, locating on west lot 9 in what is now Potter, then
the District of Canandaigua; the town of Augusta not having yet been organized…In
1817 he married Rebecca Hall, daughter of James Hall, another pioneer of that
locality. She was born near the same place, March 15, 1800, and survives her
venerable consort….He and his worthy wife had four children—Ellen, Huldah
D., Isaac D., and John. The latter born in 1827 is an esteemed citizen residing
on the paternal homestead. Ellen, born in 1819, married Harmon Stiles of Potter
and resides at Fredonia. Huldah D. born in 1820, married Hiram U. Reynolds of Benton
and resides at Foreston, Ill. Isaac D., born in 1822,
married Margaret Scott of the town of Seneca, who died leaving three children.
Loren D., the oldest, holds an important railway position at Toledo,
Ohio. John Voak the pioneer and his wife
were natives of New Jersey. Both
reached the age of eighty-one, she dying in 1845, and he in 1849. Abraham Voak
his brother preceded him two years in his settlement, locating on lot 94 in
Benton where Jeremiah Slaughter
now resides. …John Voak’s nearest neighbors were Abraham
Voak and David Southerland, each a mile and a half distant….The children of
John Voak were Lydia, James (the subject of this notice), Abraham, Isaac, Sarah,
Samuel, Joseph, Mary, John and Josiah. Mary and John died young. Lydia
born in 1789 married Rev. Peregrine Hollet of Potter,
settled on a part of the homestead and survives, a widow at eighty-five. Abraham,
born in 1793, married Patty Payne of Potter, and they had six children, all
of whom are scattered in the west. Isaac, born in 1795, married Beersheba Payne
of Potter. He died in 1834, leaving four children. His widow married Benjamin
Hollet. Sarah, born in 1797, married John Payne of
Potter. He was a merchant at Prattsburg, afterwards a farmer near the old homestead
in Potter. They had four children. Joseph, born in 1800, married first Abigail
Walling of Potter, and second Martha Owen of Rushville. Two children were born
of each marriage. Josiah, born in 1809, married Lucretia, daughter of Stephen Wyman of Potter. They reside
in Benton. They had five children.
Died at his home in Jerusalem on
Thursday morning, April 2, John Dorman, aged nearly sixty-eight years. [His]
grandfather was John Dorman one of the first residents of Penn Yan…His wife
was Sybil Gilbert…His oldest son Aaron Gilbert Dorman married Experience, daughter
of Isaiah Youngs of Milo and sister of the late George Youngs…They lived a few
years in Livingston county, afterwards some time at Dresden and finally moved
to Jerusalem where he died many years ago, leaving nine children, among whom
was John Dorman, the subject of this notice. The widow is still living, having
for many years resided with her son John, just deceased. She was ninety-six
years old in January last, and is perhaps the oldest person in the county…She
was probably a native of New Jersey, from whence her father Isaiah Youngs moved
in 1802 when he settled in this town. John Dorman her son married Aurilla, daughter of Edward Briggs of Jerusalem,
and resided through life on the homestead farm in Jerusalem…He
had eight children, several of whom still reside in Jerusalem.
His daughter Mary is the wife of Wm. C. Davis of Jerusalem,
and his son George has resided in the past four years on the homestead, and
the youngest son Adelbert resides there at the present
time.
The body of a drowned man was found in the river at Seneca Falls
on the 28th ult., which upon identification proved to be that of John
Felber who suddenly disappeared from Waterloo
on the 22d of Jan. last. He was a German of the age of thirty-three.
Chillion Headley, a citizen of Dundee,
died early on Sunday morning last, aged seventy-four years, four months and
seven days…

Mrs. Frances Hoos of Benton.
Branchport—We have had considerable sickness during
the latter part of the winter, and two deaths of young children. An infant child
of Simeon Wagener, and the only son and child of Clark Benedict,
have departed to the better land.
Mrs. Filetta Crisfield was buried from the church
here last Sabbath….The very sudden death of her son Charles about a year ago
was a severe shock…

Crank, only daughter of J.F. and M. Agnes Crank, aged 2 years, 6 months and
19 days. The remains were deposited in the vault at “Graceland
Cemetery.”

Keziah Drake, aged 81 years, died in Palmyra
recently.
The Prattsburg News records the death of Mr. Dan Edson
of that town who had resided there since 1806. He was in his ninetieth year.
John Dorman, whose decease we noticed last week, was born June
16, 1806, the day of a great total eclipse of the sun. The people
who remember that eclipse are becoming few and scattering. A few years ago they
were quite numerous.

Saturday, April 11, 1874,
James Peckens, aged seventy-three
years. …He was one of the children of David Peckens
and Experience Pierce his wife, who emigrated in 1810 from Massachusetts
to this county, settling on what was then known as the Seeley farm in Jerusalem.
Of the eleven children of these parents, Elipha Peckens still remains a resident of Benton,
now nearly eighty years of age. James Peckens, the
subject of this notice, married Matilda Briggs of Marcellus. They settled in
Jerusalem near Sabintown
where they have ever resided.—They had nine children, of whom seven survive.
Recently married at the home of the bride, by Rev. Moses Livermore, Tilden
Semans to Mary Matthews, all of Starkey.
Died in Pulteney April 8th, 1874, Abigail wife of John
Waterous in her sixty-first year. [She] was a daughter of
Samuel Barnes of Jerusalem…Her brothers
and sisters were Daniel, James, George, Mary Ann, Rosetta, Almira. Samuel Barnes died Nov. 8th, 1861. His relict
died at the house of a daughter living in Benton
in the year 868, as we are informed. Abigail Barnes was married to Lewis Finch
on Feb. 22d, 1832. Their
children were Daniel W., Almira, Samuel Leander and
Rachel Ann. Lewis Finch died April 2d,
1842 aged thirty-one years. Abigail his widow, at the age of nearly
thirty-nine years, was thus left with four children the eldest of scarcely nine
years and the youngest less than two years old. She remained a widow thirteen
years—on May 28th 1855
she was united in wedlock to John Waterous who had
also lost the companion of his youth a number of years before. They have since
resided in the towns of Jerusalem
and Pulteney. Mr. John Waterous will be seventy-five
years old on the twenty-ninth of July next. Almira
daughter of Lewis and Abigail Finch is the wife of Roswell Clark, residing in
Pulteney. Ward Finch married Alice, daughter of Jas. DeKay
in 1867, and they also live in Pulteney. …
Mrs. Hannah Cleveland, relict of E.W. Cleveland, died Friday morning April
10th…She had reached the ripe age of 79 years…--Naples Record
We learn that a very sad affair happened in Tyrone on the 2d inst. Mr. Abel
Halleck, who resided on the road leading from this
village to Wayne, was found dead in his barn about one o’clock p.m. of that
day…He is reported to us to have been about 51 years old, a farmer well to do
in life, pleasantly situated and respected. His wife was the widow of the late
Charles Bodine, and she is left in widowhood again
with the care of five children, two as the fruit of her first marriage, and
three by her late husband….—Dundee Record

inst., …Mrs. Lorinda Skiff,
wife of Mr. Russell Skiff aged 72 years 1 month and 22 days. Her maiden name
was Noteware. She was born in Great Barrington, Mass.,
Feb. 9, 1802. In the early
part of the year 1823 she was married to Mr. Abner
Skiff, and in June of that year they emigrated to this
country and first settled in what was then Wayne,
now Barrington, on the farm now
owned by the family of the late Robert Robson. The following winter they removed
to Reading now Starkey, and purchased the farm now occupied by Mr. Theodore
F. Holden…They became the parents of seven children, three sons and four daughters…In
1853 Mr. Skiff departed this life…She remained a widow one year when she married
Mr. Russel Skiff of Reading Center, a brother of her

The Schuyler county papers record the death of Judge John Crawford of the town
of Dix, in his seventy-ninth year.
The Judge was a noted pioneer in his town and long one of its foremost men.
Died in Benton on Sunday April 19, 1874, Mrs. Anna Youngs, widow of
Russel Youngs, aged ninety-two years and four months….She
was one of the little colony of Coles, Hulls and Buells
who came to settle in the forests of No. Eight in 1792. She was a daughter of
Samuel Buell, Sr., and a half sister of Cyrus Buell,
father of the late David H. Buell. She was eleven
years old when her family came to Benton…At
the age of twenty, in 1801, she married Russel Youngs.
The marriage ceremony was performed by James Parker…Her husband died in 1832
leaving six children. One of them is Mrs. Ezekiel Clark of Jerusalem,
and another is Mrs. Samuel H. Chapman, with whom she has made her home for many
years….
William Y. Hulse a well known citizen of Jerusalem, died on Friday last, April 17th, at the age of
sixty-five years. Mr. Hulse has been about twenty-five
years a citizen of Jerusalem and
was for several years Keeper of the County Poor House, in which position he
was capable and efficient.
Mr. Manchester Townsend, an aged citizen residing near Milo Centre died on
Wednesday, April 15th, 1874. His father Hezekiah
Townsend was one of the pioneers of the Friend’s Settlement and long a Justice
of the Peace during the early years of the present century.

19, 1874, Mr. Bela Colegrove aged nearly seventy-seven
years…His widow is well known in this vicinity, formerly Mrs. Adelaide G. Sprague
and a daughter of Abraham H. Bennett.
Mrs. Sarah Morehouse, the first white person in the village of Geneva—Nov.

As Geneva had been a trading post
quite a number of years when this lady was born, and for more than four years
had been a point of importance for the settlers of the Phelps and Gorham purchase,
quite a place indeed; it is hardly probable that she was the first white child
born there.
Died in this village on the evening of the 11th inst. of Bright’s
disease of the kidneys, Mr. Chester Andrews, son of Mr. Allen Andrews, aged
45 years. He was unmarried and leaves but few relatives in this part of the
country.—Dundee Record
Died at Avon, April 11th, 1874, aged 48
years and months [sic], Hannah wife of Clayton Whitmore, a worthy citizen of
Avon. The deceased was born at Middlesex in 1825, and
was a daughter of the old pioneer, Deacon William Search, still hale and hearty.—Rochester

Died in Reading on the 4th
inst., Mrs. Nancy Skinner, aged about 54 years. We
are informed she was a daughter of Col. John Starkey, who was an early merchant
here when this town was a part of Reading.
He was a Justice of the Peace in this town and it was from him the town was
named. The remains were brought here and deposited in Hillside
cemetery, thus coming home to her native town to find her final resting place.—Dundee

Died in Italy Hollow on Friday night, April 17th, Mrs. Cornelia
Williamson, aged 75 years, 2 months and 15 days. Mrs. Williamson, whose maiden
name was Cornelia Kip, was born in Mindon, Montgomery Co., February 2, 1799. She married James G. Williamson at Johnstown,
February 12, 1820, and they
removed to Italy Hollow about 1828. Her husband died in this place April 4, 1842, aged 49 years. Of the
family seven children are now living—Julia Ann wife of Alfred Decker of Gorham;
Catharine E., wife of W.R. Webster; Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Robson; Henry
K. and Cornelia of Italy Hollow; Esther M. wife of Charles Robson; and R. Frank
Williamson now residing in Illinois….
Died in Orange, Schuyler county,
Helen, only daughter of Rev. J.T. Otis, formerly of Starkey, aged three years.
This is a second loss by these parents of a lovely child.
Died in Barrington on the 18 inst.,
of cancer, Miss Samantha Porter, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Porter,
aged 59 years. …For several years she has resided in Penn Yan with her uncle
Martin Holmes, whose invalid wife she attended till her decease. Since then
she has resided with or in the family of Farley Holmes….—Dundee Record
Rushville—died in this village April 19th, 1874, Mrs. Sarah
Ann Hobart aged 89 years. [She] was born in Lynn,
Connecticut, April 19th, 1785; her maiden name was Chadwick.
She came to Dresden, Yates county, about 70 years ago, to visit two elder married
sisters named Brown…While teaching a school in Potter, she became acquainted
with her future husband, Mr. John Hobart, and was married to him November 17th,
1810 in Rushville…Mr. Hobart died at their residence near this village October
15th, 1860. They had ten children, eight are living; two daughters—Mrs.
Beerman and Mrs. Verselius—reside in this village, another daughter in Pennsylvania,
and four sons and a daughter in the western states. Her son, Mr. Orville Hobart,
of Grass Lake, Mich.,
and her two daughters here, were with her during her last illness….—Naples
