This family burial ground is shown on the 1865 county map. The farm was owned by the Caleb Hazen family for most of the 19th century and into the 20th. It is remembered by a few living persons, at least one of whom states the burials were removed. All known members of the Hazen family who owned the farmland surrounding the intersection are now buried in Lakeview cemetery in Penn Yan, section 2.
The Stiles Road here forms part of the line between the towns of Milo and Benton; the site of this cemetery is within sight of the
Townsend cemetery on the west side of the Pre-emption Road in Benton. Apparently there has been some confusion between the two over the years, leading to the latter sometimes being referred to as the Hazen or Hazens Corners cemetery.
The Hazen farm was purchased by members of the Winship family, and the nearby intersection, long known as Hazens Corners, was sometimes then called Winships Corners. Both names were often transferred to the Townsend cemetery. |
