Early Tax Lists
Ontario County Towns now in Yates County NY

These early tax rolls were made in an era when personal property was taxed as well as real estate. They show the name of each property owner (in alphabetical order), the value of his or her real property, the value of taxable personal property, the total value, and the tax to be paid thereon. Some of the lists describe the property itself, its location, number of acres, whether it's a farm or a lot, whether there's a house there or not. The lists posted on this site are transcripts of the entire roll, complete with the assessors' eccentric spelling of names. Each town has a separate index that covers all the names on all the lists in the table.

Please bear in mind that the town of Benton rolls contain the names of what are now Milo property owners until 1818, when Milo was split from the older town; and both Benton and Milo rolls at this early date contain property owners living in what is now Torrey, which wasn't formed until 1851. Middlesex was called Augusta until 1808, and included what is now the town of Potter until 1832.

The original lists are held at the Ontario County Archives; photocopies were made for the Yates County Historian's Office some years ago of all lists held by the Archives that pertain to towns now in Yates County. It is these photocopies that have been transcribed here.
