  • In Penn Yan on Monday Evening, Aug. 29th, by Dr. J.E. Latimer, Darius Allen, Esq., and Mary E., daughter of John D. Stewart, of Penn Yan….

Luman Sprague, formerly a farmer in Benton, and recently a citizen of Penn Yan, died last Saturday at the age of fifty four years. He had no relative in this county except his wife and son, who survive him….

Ernest V. Harding, editor and publisher of the Livingston Democrat, died at Nunda on Thursday last, at the age of twenty-four. He was to have been married on the day of his death.

Died at his residence near Branchport on Wednesday, August 31, 1870, Capt. William H. Chidsey, at the age of seventy-two years. He was a native of New Haven, Conn., and before his majority became a seaman, a course of life he followed sixteen years, during which time he twice circumnavigated the globe, and a portion of the time commanded a merchant vessel. After leaving the sea he was sixteen years a merchant in Mobile. Twenty-three years ago he purchased the farm where he subsequently resided south of Branchport, near Keuka Lake; and there he died…. In early life he married Miss Finch, of Brooklyn, who died leaving two daughters, Susan and Frances. The first is the wife of Charles Bradley, of New Haven, and the latter is the wife of John Morris, a merchant of Brooklyn.—Both these daughters were visitors at their father’s house at the time of his death. He married in 1836 a second wife, Sarah Peters, who survives him.—Five children were born of the second marriage, two of whom died early. A son Irving, was a brave and excellent soldier in Berdan’s regiment of sharp shooters. He was killed in battle at Mine Run, Va. Though not twenty-one at the time of his death, a Captain’s commission was ready for him. William H. Chidsey, a surviving son, married Josephine Wagstaff of Pulteney, and is a farmer in that town. Rebecca, the surviving daughter of the second marriage, is the wife of Frank Perry, formerly of Bridgeport, Conn., and now resident at Canandaigua.

Mrs. Abner W. Shearman died at her home in this village, on Monday last after a brief illness. She was a daughter of D.H. Bennett, of Branchport. She left an only daughter of three years.

Mr. Richard Beard, who lives in the south part of Dundee, is now 90 years old. Mr. Hiram Bell is 85.—Mrs. Phebe Hudson is 84. Mrs. Sarah Reynolds is 80. Mrs. Hannah Harpending is 88. Mr. Samuel Vance is 88, and his wife is 78. Mrs. Clarissa Hackett is 81.
Mr. Vance and his wife were married August 23, 1810, consequently have lived together 60 years, have raised ten children, six sons and four daughters, who are all living and in good circumstances…. These aged people were among the pioneers of civilization in this country…. Then at Eddytown are Mrs. Caleb Cowing, formerly Miss Boyce, who taught the first school in Starkey, he is 84 and his wife a few months older, we think.
Then there is a lady at Mr. Cunningham’s (his mother, we think) who is in her 90th year.
This is a pretty fair record for our town, and shows that we have a healthy locality. Mr. Vance says it is so healthy here, he had made up his mind he could not die here, so he has sold out, and is going to Michigan to get a chance to die.—Dundee Record

We regret to announce the sudden death on Friday the 9th inst., of Mr. J.H. Stothoff at his residence near Burdett, Schuyler county. He was gored to death by a bull. Mr. S. was the father in law of Hon. Geo. J. Magee of Watkins. He formerly resided in Lodi, this county. …—Ovid Bee

Abram I. Quackenbush died in Prattsburg on the 3rd instant; age eighty-one years.

Judge Levi Knox, a former citizen of Barrington, died in the village of Wayne, on the 6th of September, at the age of seventy-six. He was a native of Carmel, Putnam county, and settled in Barrington in 1836, resided on the old Teeples place several years and moved thence to Wayne. He was a Justice of the Peace in Wayne a number of years, and at one time a judge of the County Court.

Died at her residence on Clinton Street, Penn Yan, on Friday the 16th inst., Mrs. Adaline Gooding Page, at the age of seventy years. She was well known to the citizens of this county having long kept a boarding house in Penn Yan…. For some years she kept the Shearman House…. She was the daughter of William C. Gooding, and was born in Washington county in 1800. In middle life she became the second wife of Erastus Page, the father of Mr. George B. Page of this village and Mrs. George Wagener, and she was a good mother to the young family. He died many years ago, leaving her a widow… Her sister, A. Eliza Gooding, survives her and occupies the homestead she left.

  • In the town of Seneca, Sept. 14, 1870, by Rev. Mr. Patten, Charles Coleman, Esq., of Benton, to Mrs. Mary Akenhead, daughter of the late Edward Hall of Seneca.

Mrs. Polly Rappleye, a very old lady of Farmer Village, and relict of the late William Rappleye of that place, died on Thursday last. He hear her age stated as upwards of ninety.—Seneca Co. Courier

Augustus Ely died at Watkins, on Wednesday of last week, at the age of eighty four years, of paralysis. He was long a citizen of the town of Hector, having lived there from the age of nine years, till near the period of his death, and was in all respects a most estimable citizen.

Mrs. Mary Holcomb died in this village on the 9th inst., at the age of 94 years. Her former husband, Capt. E. Holcomb, was once a sailor, and afterwards kept a public house, where the residence of E.B. Jones now stands.—He died at the West, whence she returned. She has been for many years a subject of charity in the Methodist Church. Her constitution was so good that she would probably have survived to the age of one hundred years had she not been injured by a fall from a window.

  • In Penn Yan on Tuesday evening, Oct. 4th, by Rev. A.C. Mallory, Mr. Charles Z. Crane of Wyandotte, Kansas, and Miss Sarah Jane, daughter of Charles Holden of Penn Yan.

Robert H. Marriott, a lawyer of Watkins, died in that village at the age of forty-six, Sept. 30th. The funeral on the Sunday following, was held at the Court House, under the auspices of the spiritualists, a Mrs. Robbins conducting the exercises.

Jehiel C. Griswold died at his residence in Jerusalem, Oct. 5th, 1870, at the age of seventy-nine years. He was a native of Fulton county, and married in 1816 Rhoda Sheppard who still survives.—His father Jehiel C. Griswold, Senior, settled in Benton in 1807. In 1835 the son moved to Jerusalem where he died. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, serving in the company of Captain Abner Woodworth. He leaves a number of descendants.

Gen. Robert E. Lee is dead, and profoundly mourned by the people of the South who sympathized with the rebellion. He was a cultivated gentleman, a good soldier, and a traitor to his country.

Died in Potter, of this county, on Sunday, Oct. 16, 1870, Ambrose S. Thomas Esq., of paralysis. Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Abiel Thomas Esq., who was an early settler, coming from Rensselaer county, on the Hudson River, to the now town of Potter, in 1801, then a wilderness, and on locating on a farm where he and his wife both remained until their death. The subject of this notice was their third child, was born in Potter, Nov. 6, 1804, and has been a constant resident of the town since, and therefore identified with nearly its whole history…. His wife died on the 19th of Dec., 1836. She was Miss Jane McPherson of Seneca, N.Y. They have six surviving children, viz: James G., a merchant at Geneva, and unmarried. Margaret M. married Zerah F. Summers, and resides at Crown Point, Ind. Berdethe E. married George G. Foster of Crown Point, Ind. Jeffrey W. married Sarah, daughter of Henry Husted, reside at present in Potter. Mary J. married Doct. J.B. Voak, and reside at Canandaigua. Loe R., unmarried and resides west with her sisters…. COM.

Died of consumption at Rushville, Yates county, on the afternoon of the 6th inst., Cuyler F. Green, a member of the Yates County Bar, aged 37 years. [He] was a native of Rushville, and of highly respectable parentage, one of whom, his bereaved mother, survives him….HAMILTON

Col. James B. Stoddard died at Palmyra recently, aged 87 years. During his boyhood he worked at printing, and set up a portion of Washington’s Fairwell Address for a New London newspaper on the 17th of September, 1796.

The Newark, New Jersey papers contain the particulars of the recent death of Mr. John Van Emburg of West Newark, at the advanced age of 104 years. Deceased was great-grandfather of Mr. John J. Van Emburg, and Mrs. A.H. Stowell, of this village. He was married five times, and had numerous children, grand children, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. At the age of 96 he married a German girl sixteen years old, and within a year she presented him with twins, which however lived but a short time. He lived and died in the same house where he was born….—Seneca Falls Reveille

The venerable Henry Brown, who died a few days ago at Benton Center, was ninety years old. He was a native of Connecticut.

Charles W. Morris, of the firm of Tracy Morris, and Miss Frank, daughter of Jacob F. Bridgman, were married on Wednesday evening of last week. They have our congratulations.

Died Sept. 28, 1870, Louisa A., wife of Amos C. Leach of Torrey, aged 54 years. Mrs. Leach was a daughter of James B. Carpenter, and was a native of this county, formerly of Milo. She was married twenty five years ago last July, … She leaves a bereaved husband and three children….

  • On Saturday, October 15th, at the home of the bride, by Rev. B.F. Taylor, Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Rev. Gustavus W. Mayer, late rector of this Parish, and Miss Mary, youngest daughter of Samuel J. Potter, Esq.
  • On Tuesday evening, October 18th, at Central Hotel in this town by Rev. B.F. Taylor, Harry Arnold to Jessie Tallaca, both of England.
  • On Thursday the 18th inst., by the Rev. Warren W. Welch, Charles P. Boswell of Potsdam, N.Y., and Harriet Oliver, daughter of the late Judge Oliver of this village.

  • In Benton, Oct. 14th, Delafield Barden, son of Martin W. Barden, aged 6 years and 5 months.

27 October 1870

We learn from the Seneca Falls Reveille that Amory H. Bradford, now Rev. A.H. Bradford, was married Sept. 22d at Little Falls (his father the officiating clergyman) to Miss Julia M. Stevens of that place, also that the young man has recently been installed Pastor of the Congregational Church at Mont Clair, N.J. The Reveille states that Rev. B.F. Bradford and his wife were in Seneca Falls lately on their return from a visit to their son.

Died at Himrods on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 1870, Mrs. Mary Starkey Semans, wife of David Semans, aged seventy-seven years. Mrs. Semans was born in Kent Co., Maryland in 1793. She was a sister of John Starkey the pioneer from whom the town of Starkey took its name. She and her husband settled in 1811 in Lodi, then Ovid, and moved to Starkey, then Reading, in 1816, where they resided till within a few years past. She was the mother of ten children all of whom are living. The oldest is Mary B., wife of James M. Lewis of Milo. William S., Clayton, Nelson, John E., Triden and Ben: J. Semans are her sons. Another daughter, Matilda, married John C. Wilson, now of St. Clairice, Keno Co., Illinois. Emily is the wife of Robert F. Conklin of Milo, and Sarah the youngest remains at the father’s home. …

Died in this village on Monday, October 31, 1870, Mrs. Celena Sanford, widow of the late Daniel Sanford, aged sixty-three years. Mrs. Sanford was the mother of Prof. Henry R. Sanford of the State Normal School at Fredonia, N.Y. For about fifty years a member of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Eli Quick residing in Middlesex near Vine Valley came to his death very suddenly on Wednesday, October 20, by the accidental discharge of his gun, which he was handling in his own house. The charge entered his side just above his heart, and death ensued at once. He was a brother-in-law of William S. Green of Italy and a respectable citizen, upwards of forty years of age. He leaves a widow and no children.

William Bennett, youngest son of Abraham H. Bennett, died in Washington yesterday.

Died in Penn Yan on Thursday night, October 27th, at the residence of Alexander Perry, her son-in-law, Mrs. Martha Barrett, widow of Reuben Barrett, formerly of this village, in the eighty-sixth year of her age. She had been for forty years a member of the Baptist Church, and was the mother of a large family, ten in all. Her sons were Warren, Josephus, Geo. W. and Palmer; and her daughters were Elizabeth, Amanda, Emily and Melvina, now living. Elizabeth is the wife of Thomas C. Sutton, of Jerusalem, Amanda is the wife of Harvey Corwin, of this village, Emily is the wife of William K. Ackley of this village, and Melvina is the wife of Alexander Perry. … When her husband was absent as a soldier in the war of 1812 she cut down trees in the woods to supply her own fires, and provide warmth for her young family. She has one surviving sister, Mrs. Achsa Clark, widow, residing near Dresden.

Died in the twenty-ninth year of his age, at his lodging, 817 E street in this city, at 1 o’clock yesterday morning, W.W. Bennett of Penn Yan, Yates county, N.Y. The deceased had been ill of consumption for over a year….His body, in charge of his brother Clement W. Bennett, Esq., left the city last evening for Penn Yan.—Washington Daily Chronicle, Nov. 3.
William W. Bennett was the youngest son of Abraham H. Bennett, the founder of the Penn Yan Democrat in 1817, and belonged to a family well-known to the people of Penn Yan and Yates county. None are left here now except his sister Mary, a faithful and industrious teacher.… The funeral of the young man took place in the house where he was born, now occupied by E. G. Hopkins….

Died at his residence, Esperanza, Yates county, N.Y., on Monday Nov. 7, 1870, John Nicholas Rose, in the 71st year of his age. … He was a native of Stafford county, Va., where he was born in 1799. His father, Robert Selden Rose, emigrated from Virginia in 1804 and located in Seneca county near Geneva. … Two of his sons, John N. and Henry became citizens of Yates county, the first in 1823, and the latter in 1836. John N. Rose bought of John Beddoe ten hundred and fifty-eight acres, or so much of the Beddoe purchase as lies east of Keuka Lake. On this estate he has since resided. In 1829 he married Jane E. Macomb, of the city of New York, niece of Gen. Alexander Macomb, who survives him….

  • At the residence of the bride’s father, Nov. 3d, by Rev. W.B.H. Beach, of Naples, assisted by Rev. Austin Craig and Rev. S.H. Bowdish of Eddytown, Mr. Clark M. Sharp of Rock Stream and Miss Marinda L., youngest daughter of Daniel Shannon of Starkey.

  • At Le Roysville, Oct. 25, Polydore B. Wisner, aged 49, son of Mrs. Susan Wisner of this place.

The Dundee Record notices the death of Deacon Horace Kidder at Honeoye Falls, Nov. 14th inst., at the age of seventy-three years. He was a native of the town of Benton, where he sold his possessions many years ago, living afterwards in Penn Yan, subsequently in Dundee, from whence he removed to Honeoye Falls. He was a member of the Baptist church and formerly a deacon in the society at Benton Center.

John Luther died in Jerusalem on Saturday last, the 19th inst., at the age of fifty-six years. He was a half-brother of Azor Barrett, now of Penn Yan. His father Elisha Luther was one of a family of eight children who came from Rhode Island with their mother, Elizabeth Luther, in the first settlement of Friends. They were firm adherents of the Friend’s Society and excellent people. Elisha Luther’s second wife was Sidna Barrett, mother of Azor Barrett, and five children were the offspring of this marriage, David, Deborah, Mary, John and Elisha. David resides in Michigan, Deborah is the wife of Jeremiah S. Burtch, and Mary, who died in 1867 was the wife of Robert McDowell Boyd. John Luther married Mary, daughter of George Briggs of Potter, and survives her husband with two children, Elisha and Sarah, both of whom are married. Mr. Luther was a quiet unobtrusive citizen whose life was blameless.

We are informed that in our notice of the decease of John Luther, we were in error in stating that the son of Mr. Luther is married.

Died of consumption in Penn Yan, Nov. 28th, Oliver M. Finger, son of John Finger, of Benton, aged about 30 years. The deceased was a soldier in the war of the Rebellion, first in the 11th Pa. Cavalry, and afterwards in Company I, 148th Regiment, commanded by Capt. Martin S. Hicks; and was discharged before Petersburg on account of wounds received in the service. He was a married man.

The Tin Wedding of D.M. Hulse and wife was celebrated at their residence in Canandaigua a few days ago. It is mentioned by the papers of that place as a very pleasant affair.

Died very suddenly of apoplexy at Potter Centre on Tuesday, November 29th, Cyrus Dains in the fifty-fourth year of his age. Cyrus Dains was a son of Jonathan Dains and a grandson of Jonathan Dains, Sen., one of the earliest of the pioneer settlers and a Member of the Friend’s Society. He was born in Jerusalem in 1817 and learned the trade of a blacksmith. He wrought at his trade till he accidentally lost his right hand in 1848, locating at Potter Centre in 1838. After the loss of his hand, he conducted a store at Potter Centre where he held the office of Post Master at the time of his death. In 1841 he married Jane, daughter of Abraham and Margaret Stout of Potter. His wife survives him as does their only child Margaret, wife of George Gardner at Naples. … Francis Perry and Richard Dains of this village, and John Dains of Jerusalem are his brothers.

Dr. John C. Fargo of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died at his residence in that city on the 26th of November, last, at the age of fifty-six years. He had resided in that place since 1853, was recently Marshal of the city, and formerly held the office of Sheriff of Pottawatomie County, including Council Bluffs…. [He] was a native of the town of Benton, where his mother still survives at the age of ninety-four. He was a son of Dr. Calvin Fargo, well known in the early history of Yates County as a teacher and a physician. Two of his sisters reside with their aged mother in Benton, and another is the wife of William H. Gage of this village. He has two surviving brothers, Russel R. Fargo of Pulteney, and Elisha W. Fargo of Brooklyn. The deceased was bred as a physician, following the profession of his father….

  • At his residence in Jerusalem on Tuesday the 22d ult., Isaiah Davis, aged 67 years, 8 months and 3 days. He was born March 19th, 1803 and was the only son of Jonathan Davis, whose death occurred last winter, and who was one of the earliest pioneers of the county….

15 December 1870

John Ouderkirk, now of Milo, and formerly of Prattsburg, and his wife Catharine, will celebrate their Golden Wedding on Tuesday the 27th inst., at the house of their daughter, Mrs. Nancy Olney, wife of Mr. Alexander Olney, corner of Chapel and Pine streets in this village. Mr. Ouderkirk is a native of Schenectady county, where he was born in October, 1800. His wife, Catharine Haynes, was born in Upper Canada in 1800. They were married in Canada in 1820. They have several children in this place, and many friends in this county who will no doubt be glad to participate in making the Golden nuptials of this aged couple a pleasant occasion.

We are called to announce another of those sad afflictions which have made desolate so many homes. Mrs. Ann Eliza Dains, wife of Perry Dains, died in the 38th year of her age, last Tuesday afternoon from the effects of scarlet fever….

  • In Potter on Saturday Dec. 16, 1870, John C., son of George W. and Phebe Van Scoy of that town, aged three years, four weeks and four days.

Elizabeth Pipher died at Groton, Tompkins Co., a few days ago, aged 108 years.

Dr. Guy L. Doubleday, whose death occurred last week, was a son of Dr. Elisha Doubleday who was long an eminent physician at Italy Hill, and a leading citizen of the County. He was the first physician in that town, settling there in 1820. His son, Guy L., was also educated a physician and retained the homestead of his father. He married Caroline daughter of William L. Hobart, who is left a widow with three children.

Died at her residence in Jerusalem on Thursday the 22d inst., Mrs. Hannah Shearman, wife of Bartleson Shearman, at the age of fifty one years. Mrs. Shearman was the grand daughter of Elder John Potter, a Christian minister and a man whose character is spoken of with reverence by all who remember him….

Miss Sarah W. Noyes, daughter of John Noyes, late of Starkey, died at Watkins a few days since. It is stated that her nuptials were to have been celebrated soon.

Benjamin Ferris of Ulysses, Tompkins County, died on the 12th inst., in the one hundredth year of his age.

Miss Isabella Shearman, daughter of the late George Shearman, died in this village on Sunday evening last, after a lingering illness of consumption, aged forty-five years.
