Yates County Cemetery Project
Part VIII: Cemeteries in the town of Starkey

OLD BAPTIST CEMETERY, DUNDEE: Notes

Old Baptist cemetery, Dundee

The first Baptist Church in Dundee was built on this lot, on land donated by Samuel Harpending.

When a new church was built elsewhere, this old churchyard remained. A new Episcopal Church was built on the site of the old one near the turn of the 20th century, and this building is now used for the town hall.

The cemetery is in rather poor condition, mostly from age and neglect. Some of the stones have weathered into illegibility, others are fallen or broken. The town is now responsible for its maintenance, and this should slow further deterioration.

Many readings have been done of this cemetery, and all those known to the compilers were used to make this list as complete as possible; however, numerous errors were noticed as well, which crept into successive earlier lists. All information that could possibly be checked was confirmed, and the decision then reluctantly made to eliminate a few names, those of people whose gravestones no longer exist and for whom no other evidence could be found.

The cemetery is on public property and easily accessible from Seneca Street. It is occasionally called the Harpending Cemetery, because the family plot is located here, and the only recent burials have taken place in this plot.
