Part III: Cemeteries in the town of Torrey

HOPETON CEMETERY: Notes
Hopeton Cemetery

This is the burial ground associated with the so-called "lost village" of Hopeton. The settlement was centered around the old intersection of Routes 14 and 54, the four corners of Route 54 with the present Hopeton Road. Hopeton was founded by Charles Williamson in the middle l790s, on the road between Geneva and Bath, near a mill site on the Keuka Lake Outlet.

The village was laid out with regular surveyed lots around a central square and is marked on early maps of the area. However, once Dresden began to grow with its superior milling and transshipping facilities on the Crooked Lake Canal, Hopeton was doomed. It is said that its houses were skidded into Dresden and that some still remain there.

The cemetery can be reached from the Hopeton Road along its own long narrow driveway. It is no longer an active cemetery, and the town now maintains it after a long period of neglect. Many of the stones are broken and some are apparently missing.

There is no remaining cemetery record, but because of its age and importance there have been several earlier readings, and all the known ones have been incorporated in this list. Besides the general Torrey sources, the Reynolds reading of 1955 was helpful in deciphering some of the more obscure stones.
