The following volunteers have agreed to look up information for researchers seeking help with Yates County families. Please respect the fact that they are volunteers: try to keep your inquiries short and to the point, and remember that it takes very little time to thank the person who helped you. As coordinator of this site I can't afford to lose these folks!
Rich MacAlpine has volunteered to look up references in:
Stafford C. Cleveland's History of Yates County (1872): The better of the two 19th century histories of the county for genealogical information; Cleveland was the editor of one of the Penn Yan newspapers and published the family material there in the late 1860s so it could be corrected and embellished. There are two volumes, with a great deal of space devoted to the Universal Friend and her followers, plus a chapter on each of the county's nine towns.
Ensign, Everts & Ensign New Historical Atlas of Yates County, NY (1876): This book gives accurate landowner maps of all the county's towns, villages and hamlets, plus lovely pencil drawings of structures and landscapes. Some genealogical and historical information is also given.
Jacquelyn Hanna will look up references in:
Tree Talks, the publication of the Central New York Genealogical Society, headquartered in Syracuse, which specializes in printing primary source material from the counties it covers, including Yates County.
The Index to the federal census of New York in 1860
