Tragedy on the Plains
miles, that the weather was extremely cold and blustering
and the snow very deep, and that he had
not been heard of since, and that the be-
lief there was that he had perished in such attempt.
And your petitioner further shows that after-
wards he received a letter from one L.M. Pratt
of said territory which said letter was di-
rected to any person by the name of
Champlin, that in substance the said
letter gave to your petitioner about the
same information in respect to the
probable death of the said Jeffrey
as had been communicated in the
aforesaid letter to the neighbor of your
petitioner, that
your petitioner
thereupon or soon after the receipt of
the last named letter joined in a
letter of inquiry directed to the
said L.M. Pratt and in due course
of mail received in reply the letter
which is also hereto annexed and to
which your petitioner also begs leave to refer.
And your petitioner further shows
he has not received any letter from the said Jeffrey
since the one of the date of the 11th of January afore-
said, nor has he in any other way or manner
