The Town of Starkey and Its Records
Starkey was organized in 1824 from part of the town of Reading in
Steuben County and named for John Starkey, a prominant early merchant
and citizen. Starkey is the only town in the county to include no part
of Phelps & Gorham's Purchase, since it lies entirely east of the
Old Pre-emption Line, which forms its western boundary. Starkey was
annexed into Yates County in 1826.
Starkey has a long shoreline on Seneca Lake. The town is cut by
several deep ravines through which streams flow that once powered a
strong water-powered milling industry. The hamlets of Rock Stream and
Glenora reflect this segment of the town's past. The original settlement
in the town was at Lakemont, called Eddytown before the turn of the
century.
The village of Dundee lies entirely with the town and comprises about
half its population. The village maintains an entirely separate set of
records. The town hall is located in Dundee, at 40 Seneca Street. The
following records have been filmed, and may be viewed at the town hall,
at the County Historian's office in Penn Yan, or at the New York State
Library in Albany.
