[ARCHIVED] Arthritis - Does this chronic disease affect you?

The CDC estimates 54.4 million U.S. adults have some form of arthritis. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 adults living in rural areas have arthritis. As our nation ages, the prevalence of arthritis in the population is expected to increase. Arthritis is considered a leading cause of disability. The most common type of arthritis found in children is juvenile idiopathic arthritis or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

More than 100 conditions affect joints and tissues around the joints, with experts defining arthritis to include “arthritis or related rheumatologic conditions”. Most of these cause pain and stiffness in and around the joint or joints that are affected. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the immune system and some internal organs. For children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the swelling, stiffness, and pain in joints could be accompanied by fever, fatigue, rash, and loss of appetite.

Most common forms of arthritis – osteoarthritis, gout, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Causes- With most forms of arthritis, the cause is unknown; however, gout is caused by elevated uric acid levels in the body. Research scientists are studying how genetics, lifestyle, and the environment may be involved in a cause.

Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce one’s risk for developing osteoarthritis and gout, as well as protecting joints from injuries.
